Introduction to SWUFE
Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) is a top university that specializes in finance, economics, and business. It is known for its entrepreneurial character and unremitting endeavors to address the needs of the people and society through academics, research, and influential alumni (drawn from the legacy of its founders and generations of excellent alumni). SWUFE is located in Chengdu, Which is recognized as “Engine City” for development and the fourth-largest aviation hub in China.
The university traces its origins back to 1925 when a group of students and academics from St. John’s University in Shanghai, led by the prominent scholar Shouyong Zhang, left the university to found Kwang Hua University (Guanghua University) in Shanghai. In 1938, following the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the university relocated its headquarters to Chengdu. This move was mirrored by other major universities in Eastern China during that time who also relocated their operations to Western China. In 1946, the Chengdu branch of Kwang Hua University formed an independent, private university called Chenghua University. After 1952, the university became a public school and was renamed and restructured several times until 1985 when it received its current name, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE). SWUFE became a “Project 211 University” in 1995, and SWUFE was listed as a “985 Innovative Platforms for Key Disciplines Project University” in 2011.
With more than 90 years of academic excellence, SWUFE has always been a choice institution for the most talented students and scholars both in China and abroad. In the fields of finance, economics, and business, SWUFE leads in teaching, research, social service, and innovation (both domestically and internationally). As it enters a new era of rapid development, SWUFE remains firm in its commitment to becoming a top university in China and an internationally-renowned institution of higher learning.

Overview of RIEM
The Research Institute of Economics and Management (RIEM) was founded in fall 2006. Currently, RIEM offers four majors: economics, finance, accounting, and management. The bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs meet top-tier international academic standards and all of RIEM’s classes are taught entirely in English. Overseas students comprise about one-third of RIEM’s student body, and the Institute is a pioneer in the internationalization of China’s economics and management schools.
RIEM is also one of China’s premier think tanks in researching China’s pressing domestic problems; this has been one of the Institute’s priorities since its inception. Over the
past seven years, RIEM’s professors and students have published 19 academic papers inEconomic Research. In 2009, RIEM launched the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) and meticulously collected comprehensive first-hand data about Chinese households’ finances. This project laid a solid foundation for both academic researchers and political policymakers to build upon.
The Economics and Management International Immersion Talent (EMIIT) program, RIEM’s undergraduate program, was established in 2009. Like the Institute’s graduate programs, all courses are taught in English and meet top-tier international academic standards, but only 150 domestic Chinese students are admitted annually out of nearly 1,000 freshman applicants.
Additionally, EMIIT has approximately 170 foreign degree students. Like its western university counterparts, EMIIT students complete general economics and management coursework during their freshman and sophomore years. During their junior year, students may choose a major and a minor from RIEM’s four tracks: economics, finance, management and accounting. More than 60% of EMIIT’s students pursue graduate degrees at top universities all over the world while other students secure employment with prestigious banks and companies.

The project aims to cultivate high-quality talents with solid knowledge of modern
economics and management; who can master the research methods and analytical tools of economics and management; who have strong international perspectives and communication skills; and who will become leaders and industry elites in the field of economics and finance in the future.
Students are expected to achieve the following goals upon completion of this program:

Program Characteristics
In order to achieve the goal of education as well as embody the educational concept of “imparting knowledge, training skills, and improving quality,” the characteristics of RIEM’s program are detailed as follows:
A. Integration of curriculum resources and improvement of the degree’s curriculum (to make course content more in-depth as well as improve courses’ prerequisites)
B. Emphasis on developing students’ data analysis abilities in order to strengthen students’ mathematical analysis ability and establish a large number of mathematics-related courses, including: advanced mathematics, probability statistics, econometrics, financial econometrics, etc.
C. Students can choose a major and a minor in economics, finance, accounting,or business administration in accordance with their goals and capabilities. Research and practicum-oriented courses are available for each major. (Students can choose their majors according to their respective career plans.)
D. Modeled after the curriculums of top American business schools, the EMIIT program has condensed its existing courses and designed compulsory courses that fully satisfy international standards.
E. Diversified elective courses.
F. Strengthening practical application and increasing “hands-on” abilities.
G. Teaching entirely in English with an international education model to provide greater space for the students’ growth; providing outstanding students with opportunities to go abroad for further studies.
H. Reading classics. Encourage professionals to suggest reading materials related to the different majors, and pay attention to cultivating students’ reading habits and improving their reading ability. The curriculum implementation plan should list necessary reading bibliographies and other reference materials. Teachers should supplement reading classics with classroom discussion, reading notes, literature reviews, and other methods.
